CHAPTER 5

Nick lay in the dark as snow drifted down gently around them, listening to the quiet sound of Alex breathing beside him. This night had certainly taken a turn he’d never seen coming. He didn’t know what to make of Alexander Creed.

The man was definitely very, very good at his job. Nick’s own level of good—which was a rather high bar, if he did say so, himself. He was smart, self-contained, and confident in his abilities. And he was laser focused on figuring out what Harlan Gray was up to. At least they had that in common.

Of course, they also had in common the way their breath hitched every time they touched each other. When he’d grabbed Alex’s hand hours ago as they walked across town handcuffed together, he’d heard the man’s gasp. Which had been a good thing because it had masked the sound of his own gasp.

And then there’d been that arm-in-arm thing at the club. When that woman had rushed Alex, he hadn’t even thought twice. He’d just flung himself forward to get her off him. He hadn’t exactly claimed possession of the guy in so many words...but that was exactly what he’d done. And Alex hadn’t freaked out.

Was it possible? Was Alex gay like him?

Normally, he had great gaydar. But then, his job required him to be expert at reading body language and subliminal signals. Of course, he was good at picking up little clues and hints that a guy was gay. But Alex was so self-controlled, so closed off, so freaking hard to read, that he couldn’t tell. At all. Which was frustrating as heck.

They also had in common the fact that they’d both had a moment with their arm around the other one’s neck, with every opportunity to break it. And neither of them had done so.

He was no murderer, but he got the distinct impression that violence was a routine part of Alex’s job. There was a certain detachment, a certain weariness of the soul about the man that spoke of having seen a lot of death and having dealt out a lot of death.

While Nick had eliminated plenty of people in his career, most of them had been in kill-or-be-killed situations that he didn’t carry away a large burden of guilt from. Even in his days as a sniper, he’d operated with the sure and certain knowledge that every person he was assigned to take out was a very, very bad person.

But if Alex was telling the truth, if he was a fixer for the US government, that meant he was executing sanctions against his own kind. Other spies, soldiers and covert operators who’d gone off the rails in one way or another and had to be stopped. And most of the time, that meant killing them.

Rough job.

He wouldn’t want to do it.

Heck, he wasn’t sure he could do it, even if he was asked to. The only reason he’d been able to stomach betraying his teammates to the Medusas was because the women had promised not to kill anyone they didn’t have to.
