CHAPTER 5
Nick lay in the dark as snow drifted down gently around them, listening to the quiet sound of Alex breathing beside him. This night had certainly taken a turn heâd never seen coming. He didnât know what to make of Alexander Creed.
The man was definitely very, very good at his job. Nickâs own level of goodâwhich was a rather high bar, if he did say so, himself. He was smart, self-contained, and confident in his abilities. And he was laser focused on figuring out what Harlan Gray was up to. At least they had that in common.
Of course, they also had in common the way their breath hitched every time they touched each other. When heâd grabbed Alexâs hand hours ago as they walked across town handcuffed together, heâd heard the manâs gasp. Which had been a good thing because it had masked the sound of his own gasp.
And then thereâd been that arm-in-arm thing at the club. When that woman had rushed Alex, he hadnât even thought twice. Heâd just flung himself forward to get her off him. He hadnât exactly claimed possession of the guy in so many words...but that was exactly what heâd done. And Alex hadnât freaked out.
Was it possible? Was Alex gay like him?
Normally, he had great gaydar. But then, his job required him to be expert at reading body language and subliminal signals. Of course, he was good at picking up little clues and hints that a guy was gay. But Alex was so self-controlled, so closed off, so freaking hard to read, that he couldnât tell. At all. Which was frustrating as heck.
They also had in common the fact that theyâd both had a moment with their arm around the other oneâs neck, with every opportunity to break it. And neither of them had done so.
He was no murderer, but he got the distinct impression that violence was a routine part of Alexâs job. There was a certain detachment, a certain weariness of the soul about the man that spoke of having seen a lot of death and having dealt out a lot of death.
While Nick had eliminated plenty of people in his career, most of them had been in kill-or-be-killed situations that he didnât carry away a large burden of guilt from. Even in his days as a sniper, heâd operated with the sure and certain knowledge that every person he was assigned to take out was a very, very bad person.
But if Alex was telling the truth, if he was a fixer for the US government, that meant he was executing sanctions against his own kind. Other spies, soldiers and covert operators whoâd gone off the rails in one way or another and had to be stopped. And most of the time, that meant killing them.
Rough job.
He wouldnât want to do it.
Heck, he wasnât sure he could do it, even if he was asked to. The only reason heâd been able to stomach betraying his teammates to the Medusas was because the women had promised not to kill anyone they didnât have to.
